Masson, Daniel; Faury, Nicole; Ratiskol, Jacqueline.

Masson, Daniel.
Suedre River, a small river in Charente-Maritime, is 45 km long and drains a 380 km2 river basin. Its flow rate is about 20 m3.s(-1). Beyond the Saujon agglomeration, the river extends to the sea via a 25-km long estuary which, through the action of tides, becomes a sea arm reaching 1 km in width. Freshwater and salt marshes line the banks of the Seudre River. Freshwater marshes are occupied by large cattle farms and intensive, irrigated crops. Salt marshes are used for oyster finishing—the final, fattening process in oyster farming. The coexistence of both types of activity is sometimes problematic, particularly in terms of water management, a frequent source of conflict. The climate in Charente-Maritime is characterised by dry summers and rainy winters,...

Merchant ships discharging unwanted marine species in close proximity of a French aquaculture area: Risks involved ArchiMer
Masson, Daniel; Thomas, Gerard; Genauzeau, Sylvie; Le Moine, Olivier; Derrien, Annick.
The most important oyster farming area in Europe is in a close proximity of two medium size merchant ports. Cargo ships deballast in this area before loading, releasing unwanted or noxious marine species. During a sampling campaign aboard these arriving ships, we found in some ballast water samples a huge number of potentially toxic dinoflagellates and some potentially pathogenic bacteria. A model was applied to find the potential geographical spread of the discharged ballast water. This model predicts the water to reach highly vulnerable shellfish farmed areas in six to eight days.

Bougrier, Serge; Masson, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Fouche, Dominique; Leroy, Anne; Faury, Nicole; Ratiskol, Jacqueline.
One of the problems faced by oyster farmers in France is the immediate or delayed mortality of oysters in the storage tanks prior to shipping. This may be due to overstocking and/or improper water management. To investigate the problem, experiments were performed in commercial storage tanks stocked with oysters at different densities. The aim of this study was to provide some basic experimental data and guidelines for better handling of oysters prior to shipping

Produits phytosanitaires et conchylicultue en Charente-Maritime ArchiMer
Masson, Daniel; His, Edouard; Dubernet, Jean-françois; Scribe, Pierre.

Thomas, Gerard; Piquet, Jean-come; Ryckaert, Mireille; Masson, Daniel; Pepin, Jean-francois; Polsenaere, Pierre; Fillon, Alain.
Marine environment contamination can affect fishing and shellfish farming products (and shellfish in the first place), thus making them improper for human consumption, threatening public health and producer’s business. Analysis and health risk management are mandatory for consumer’s security and shellfish production survival. About microbial risk, monitoring shellfish production areas and several studies carried by LERPC laboratory give a good view of the microbial contamination impacting the Pertuis Charentais shellfish production area. On the other hand, State-Region Plan Contract (CPER) studies results from 2007 to 2013 are presented and discussed; additionally, the law-prescribed sanitary studies for professional on foot-fishing classification are...

Masson, Daniel; Auger, Christian; Bouquet, Jean-paul; Courtois, Olivier; Kantin, Roger; Roesberg, Didier.
The microbiological classification of the Marennes-Oléron shellfish farming area (according to Council Directive 91/492/EEC) let appear sorne periodically polluted spots. A research of the potentiel sources has been conducted around these spots. Twelve points were sampled during a year with faecal coliforms and streptococcus contamination level in water (and shellfich when possible). Several microbiological pollution sources were found, in the Seudre estuary (umstream) and in Oléron island : lack of, or ineffective sewage systems, cattle farming without convenient manure treatrrtent, and so on .. Recommendations are given to improve this situation.

Salmoniculture à Saint-Pierre et Miquelon ArchiMer
Champigneulle, Alexis; Masson, Daniel; Puyo, Pascal.

Survival of bacteria and phytoplankton in ship's ballasts ArchiMer
Masson, Daniel; Piquet, Jean-come; Courtois, Olivier.
Billions of tons of ballast water are lreased world-wide every year. Living marine, brackish or freshwater organisms, including those noxioux or unwanted, can travel by that way from a part of the world to another. A successful introduction needs : 1) survival during the pumping process 2) survival in ships' ballasts 3) survival and repreoduction in the new environment. To assess the survival conditions in ship's ballasts, a small scale pilot system has been built (MARTOB project), more realistic than laboratory vials and easier to handle than a real ballast. Bacteria and phytoflagellates coming from ship's sampling or from cultures were introduced in the system ; their survival in several waters or sediments are studied, a useful method to assess the...

The ships' ballast waters, sources of pests introduction ArchiMer
Masson, Daniel.
At the end of the 1980s, the relatively recent Australian aquaculture industry suffered from the blooming of some unknown toxic phytoplanktonic algae. This was followed by some cases of harm to consumers' health and the shutting down of some production areas. Australian scientists quickly identified their origin, Japanese, as well as their introduction vector, the ballast waters of Japanese vessels loading in Australian harbours and deballasting along the coasts or inside the harbours. The introduction of unwanted live species from one side of the world to another can have heavy economical and sanitary consequences: harmful proliferations and epizooties, if not epidemic. Rabbits in Australia, Chinese crabs in Northern Europe, water hyacinths in Louisiana,...

Viral contamination and depuration of oysters under field conditions ArchiMer
Boher, S; Piclet, Guy; Beril-stien, S; Masson, Daniel; Delonce, R; Biziagos, E; Schwartzbrod, L.
Shellfish consumption is clearly associated with the transmission of enteric viruses. The channel of transmission of enteric viruses to human beings could be decreased particularly if the systems of depuration of shellfish were optimized, standardized and if their viral efficiency was controlled. The purpose of this work was to study the contamination of oysters and to assess the efficiency of several depuration processes. Our study have demonstrated that in some cases, 50% of oysters samples contain enteric viruses or H.A.V. antigen and the quantities of viruses range from 17 to 246 FF for the rotaviruses and from 124 to 200 for the enteroviruses per 100 g of tissue. According to our results, the exclusive use of a bacteriological criterium to determine...
